Are you one of the 14.3 million viewers who have tuned into watch the latest edition of ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ being filmed at Gwrych Castle in Abergele, North Wales? If you are, you will have seen a number of rats inside, including Naked ones. All of these rodents are within a controlled environment, but if you move away from the show, rats and mice are breeding like crazy during lockdown. You must have heard the saying that you are never more than six feet away from a rat. Well this could be correct,
During the UK-wide Covid-19 lockdown in spring, BPCA (British Pest Control Association) members, including Abate Pest Management, reported a 51% hike in rodent activity.
Now we are seeing colder temperatures, rats and mice will be driven indoors, increasing the likelihood of a pest infestation. Last month (Oct 20), 78% of pest controllers polled again reported increased rat sightings, with 63% noting a rise in mouse-related incidents.
Natalie Bungay, BPCA Technical Officer, said: “As temperatures begin to drop and food becomes scarce, rats will begin looking for shelter and scraps in more urban locations. And as autumn and winter push on, rats start to head indoors.” “Rats and mice do not hibernate and are a problem all year round. House mice are already living in and around wherever we are. But as the weather gets colder, field mice currently surviving outdoors will look for warmer places to nest and begin to move indoors too.”
“Rodents and many other pests carry and transmit diseases, and can breed at an alarming rate if left unattended. They contaminate food, ruin stock, and can even cause fires and floods with their gnawing.”
“Pro-active pest management is the best way we can manage the risks to public health and safety.”
Remember that rodents need food and shelter to breed, so any food source should be quickly cleaned away, holes and any gaps to the property need to be blocked and external paths, yard areas and perimeters need to be clean and tidy to reduce risks.
At Abate Pest Management we offer an easy access, rodent control service, where we can set up a preventative system with regular visits by our trained technicians. If you already have an infestation, give us a call and we will survey the situation, make the recommendations regarding proofing and decide on the best course of action in terms of control; this could be traps, rodenticides or a combination of both.
