No More Gulls Will Be Nesting on this Southwold Property

Southwold is a small town on the English North Sea coast in the Waveney district of Suffolk. It lies at the mouth of the River Blyth within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Like most coastal locations, Southwold has Gulls and for one home owner they have been causing issues every year by nesting by the Velux windows of his property. Gulls create lots of mess with their droppings and they can cause extensive roof damage, leading to financial problems.

Some of these problems caused by the nesting birds may include gutter blockages and gutter damage, chimney blockages and in the worst case a water damaged roof that can go on and cause many other problems. In the nesting season, when they have young, gulls also are known for attacking people.

Local builders, Duncan & Son (Southwold) Limited, called us in to install bird proofing to stop the gulls nesting each year. We designed and fabricated a hollow steel structure, which was also painted black to match the bargeboards and soffits. A canopy of netting was built over the shallow pitch roof and pin and wire was also used to stop birds landing on the ridges.

The project was completed and now the owner will be bird free for many years ahead.
